Silver Dollar Values

Silver dollar values have traditionally moved with the spot price of silver since the inception of silver dollar minting in the United States. Only on coins with a numismatic appeal will the silver dollar values begin to shift away from the spot price of silver for the day. Morgan and Peace silver dollar values generally do not trade for more than their silver content when they are in a highly circulated state.

The main reason for determining the silver dollar values in this way, as opposed to evaluating the silver dollar values based on any coin collector appeal, is because there were so many millions that were minted and are still in existence. The silver dollar values of the Morgan and Peace varieties can fluctuate and move higher than the price of their silver content when specimens are found to be in a much higher condition and of a much lower mintage. Key dates or better dates in the Morgan and Peace silver dollar series can have silver dollar values that are considerably higher than the average silver dollar values. For example, the coveted 1879 CC and 1889 CC Morgan silver dollars can have silver dollar values that move into the several thousands of dollars if they are found to be in a brilliant uncirculated condition. A common misconception when dealing with the Eisenhower dollar, which came into circulation in 1971, is that they are silver dollars and and have silver dollar values comparable to that of the Morgan and Peace silver dollar values.

In fact, the Eisenhower dollars, or “Ike” dollars for short, are made of copper nickel, thereby negating any of the the silver dollar values present in the Morgan and Peace silver dollar. There are a few exceptions to this rule. In some proof sets and other limited proof releases, the United States mints did produce 40% silver Ikes. The silver dollar values for these coins will still be dramatically lower than that of the silver dollar values within the Morgan and Peace types simply because there is a significantly lower silver content in each coin.

For most of the silver Ikes, there is almost no numismatic appeal as these coins are not old enough or rare enough to command silver dollar values greater than just the silver content within each coin. Really cool cats over at Nevada Coin and Jewelry. You would’ve thought that I was “Madonna” the way those guys treated me. This past Saturday I had the opportunity to meet the owner and team at Nevada Coin and Jewelry. I didn’t know what to expect but they made me feel both comfortable and safe. My Aunt recently passed and she lived in the outskirts of Las Vegas. While my sister and I went through her estate we found a number of items that neither of us considered keeping, but our aunt was clear in her will that she wanted us to use her things to make a profit and in turn use that money to help our futures. We shopped around, especially not being from the area, and got a lot of negative experiences just on the phone. People were rude, uninformative, and really just gave us a feeling they wanted to rip us off. It made us think of those dirty pawn shops you “hear about”. Finally I called Nevada Coin and Jewelry and the whole day shifted! We described a few pieces of jewelry and they helped us figure out initially a general value based on the metal. Of course, they did explain the importance of actually coming in and examining the pieces individually. That level of service over the phone got us through the door. When we went to the spot we were greeted with the same level courtesy, but the professionalism when going over each item and it’s value was through the roof! They took the time to explain why each item was worth what amount and even gave us a little bit of history on the styles. Been living in Vegas for many years and never had to sell or hock any of my items unfortunately as luck would have it that day did eventually find me and let me tell you is it a tough racket to find a decent place out here to do business with. As a first timer in selling, I was a bit apprehensive. I did not know what to expect and was a little worried about a previous reviewers comments. Yes the office was stark and clinical. The staff however, more than made up for any downfall in the decor. Very helpful, polite and understanding to any ‘silly’ questions that were asked. While vacationing in Las Vegas I did what a lot of people do I’m sure or at least that’s what I’m telling my wife ..I blew through the money I brought a little quicker than expected and I ended up having to shop my Rolex around to several dealers to save the trip. So I looked online for places, most offers over the phone were low and that’s if they would even quote me in the first place.
